Gastown bars and nightlife make up Vancouver’s most sophisticated drinking scene — concentrated in the city’s oldest neighbourhood, founded in 1867, along cobblestoned Water Street, Cordova, Alexander and Powell. The core is a tight cluster of excellent bars: Pourhouse on Water Street, The Alibi Room on Alexander for craft beer, and The Keefer Bar just over the line in Chinatown. Everything is walkable, most of it sits in 19th-century brick buildings, and a full crawl covers about a kilometre.
This guide ranks the Gastown drinking scene by category — cocktail bars, beer, late-night, casual pubs and live music — with a self-guided crawl route and the practical details that make the evening work.
Table of Contents
Gastown Bars Quick Overview
- Where: Water, Cordova, Alexander and Powell Streets, east of downtown
- Best for: craft cocktails, heritage rooms, a walkable crawl
- Cocktail prices: roughly C$16–22 at the serious bars
- Beer: C$7–10, more for rare taps
- Crawl distance: about 1 km end to end
- Age: 19+ across BC; ID enforced
- Busiest: Friday and Saturday from 8 PM
- Reservations: worth making at the cocktail bars on weekends
Gastown is where Vancouver drinks well. The neighbourhood has a genuine claim to one of the better cocktail scenes in North America relative to its size, and the buildings do a lot of the work — exposed brick, high ceilings and 1890s bones that no new-build can imitate.
Why Gastown Drinks Better Than Granville
The two districts are a ten-minute walk apart and could not be more different.
- Granville — large clubs, Top 40 and EDM, covers, door queues, a young crowd, volume
- Gastown — bars rather than clubs, no cover at most venues, cocktails made properly, conversation possible
If you want to dance until 3 AM, go to Granville. If you want a good drink in a beautiful room, Gastown is the answer, and it is the one visitors more often wish they had found first.
The trade-off is closing time: Gastown’s bars generally wind down between midnight and 2 AM, earlier than the Granville clubs.

The Keefer Bar
The Keefer is Vancouver’s most atmospheric cocktail destination — an apothecary-themed bar with a Chinese herbal medicine conceit running through the drinks list, in a heritage building on Keefer Street.
- Address: 135 Keefer Street — technically Chinatown, a five-minute walk from Gastown
- Style: apothecary theme, with herbs, bitters and tinctures used seriously rather than decoratively
- Room: dark, narrow, low-lit, with a wall of apothecary drawers
- Also: late-night DJs on weekends
- Reservations recommended
Worth noting the geography: the Keefer is in Chinatown, not Gastown, though it is invariably listed with the Gastown bars because it is a short walk and part of the same night out.
Pourhouse
Pourhouse at 162 Water Street is the classicist of the group — pre-Prohibition cocktails in a converted warehouse with a long bar, high ceilings and a 38-foot reclaimed-timber counter.
- Address: 162 Water Street
- Style: classic cocktails, strictly made, with a bar team that will steer you well
- Room: 1910 warehouse, brick and timber, one of the handsomest rooms in the city
- Food: a full kitchen — this works as a dinner venue, not just drinks
- Reservations recommended at weekends
If you want one drink that explains what Vancouver’s cocktail scene does well, order an Old Fashioned here and watch it being made.
The Alibi Room
The Alibi Room at 157 Alexander Street is Vancouver’s oldest craft beer destination and still the best single beer list in the city — a rotating board of BC and international taps, changing constantly.
- Address: 157 Alexander Street, at the eastern edge of Gastown
- Taps: a large rotating selection, heavily weighted to BC breweries
- The move: order the sampler flight — you choose the pours and it is the best way to survey BC beer in one sitting
- Food: a solid kitchen, well above pub standard
- Room: industrial brick, communal tables, loud and busy
- Busy from early evening; it does not take the crowd lightly
It sits in the transitional block toward the Downtown Eastside, which puts some visitors off unnecessarily — it is a short, well-lit walk from the Gastown core.
Steamworks Brewing
Steamworks at the western gateway to Gastown, by the Waterfront Station end of Water Street, is the neighbourhood’s brewpub — large, busy, and brewing on site since 1995.
- Style: brewpub with a full restaurant, spread over multiple levels
- Beer: brewed in house, with a wide accessible range
- Room: heritage building with harbour views from the upper level
- Best for: groups, an early evening start, families before the evening crowd
- Note: it is the most touristed venue in Gastown, and the beer is good rather than exceptional
Six Acres
Six Acres on Carrall Street at Maple Tree Square is the neighbourhood’s small, dark, unpretentious favourite — a narrow heritage room with a good beer list and a back patio that is one of Gastown’s best-kept secrets.
- Address: Carrall Street, on Maple Tree Square
- Style: relaxed bar with a serious bottle and tap list
- The patio: small, hidden at the back, and excellent in summer
- Food: shared plates, better than it needs to be
- Named for the original six-acre Granville townsite
Irish Pubs & Casual Spots
- Irish pubs on the western end of Water Street — live music most nights, later hours, a mixed crowd
- Sports bars for Canucks games, which transform the neighbourhood on match nights
- Hotel bars along Water Street, quieter and useful for an early drink
- Casual pubs throughout, generally cheaper than the cocktail bars by half
These are the places to start an evening or to land when the cocktail bars are full — no reservations, no waiting, lower prices.

Craft Beer in Gastown
Gastown is not Vancouver’s brewery district — that is Mount Pleasant and East Vancouver — but it has the city’s best beer bar in the Alibi Room and a brewpub in Steamworks.
- Alibi Room — the destination beer list
- Steamworks — brewed on site
- Most pubs carry a reasonable BC craft selection as standard
For actual brewery tasting rooms, head to Mount Pleasant or East Van — see our guides to the best craft breweries in Vancouver and the East Van brewery crawl.
Late-Night Spots
Gastown closes earlier than Granville, and this catches people out.
- Most cocktail bars: last call between midnight and 1 AM
- The Keefer: later on weekends, with DJs
- Irish pubs and larger venues: generally to 2 AM
- After 2 AM: Granville is the only real option
- Late-night food: limited within Gastown; Chinatown and Granville are better — see our late-night food guide
Plan the evening backwards. Start in Gastown at 7 or 8 PM, and if you want a late night, move to Granville around midnight rather than hoping Gastown will still be going.
Historic Pubs & Buildings
Part of the appeal is drinking inside the city’s oldest architecture. Gastown burned down in the Great Fire of June 1886 and was rebuilt immediately in brick and stone — which is why the streetscape is so consistent.
- Maple Tree Square — where the original Gastown settlement began, with the Gassy Jack site
- Water Street’s Victorian blocks — late 1880s and 1890s, built straight after the fire
- The Steam Clock at Water and Cambie — 1977 rather than Victorian, despite appearances, and it does whistle on the quarter hour
- Warehouse conversions along Water and Alexander, which is why so many bars have 20-foot ceilings
Our Gastown walking guide covers the architecture and history in daylight, which is worth doing before drinking your way through it at night.
By Mood & Occasion
- Most atmospheric: The Keefer Bar
- Best classic cocktails: Pourhouse
- Best beer: The Alibi Room
- Best for a group: Steamworks
- Best hidden patio: Six Acres
- Best for dinner and drinks together: Pourhouse
- Best cheap start: the Irish pubs on Water Street
- Best date: The Keefer, then a walk along the waterfront

Self-Guided Bar Crawl
About 1 km total, four stops, roughly five hours at a civilised pace.
- 6:00 PM — Steamworks (Water at Cordova). Start cheap and early with a house beer and food. 45 min.
- 7:00 PM — Pourhouse (162 Water). A classic cocktail and dinner if you want it. 75 min, longer if you stay to eat.
- 9:45 PM — Six Acres (Carrall, Maple Tree Square). A beer and the back patio if the weather allows. 45 min.
- 10:45 PM — The Keefer Bar (135 Keefer, Chinatown). Finish in the dark room with the apothecary wall. Later hours at weekends.
Beer-led variation: swap in the Alibi Room at 157 Alexander for a sampler flight, ideally early — it fills fast.
Pace it. Cocktails here are strong and around C$18 each; four stops with a drink at each is a real evening. Eat properly at stop one or two.
Practical Notes
- Reservations — worth it at Pourhouse and the Keefer on weekends
- Cobblestones — Water Street is genuinely uneven; sensible footwear matters more than usual
- Dress — smart casual is plenty; Gastown is far less strict than Granville
- Getting there — Waterfront Station is at the western edge, five minutes from most of the crawl
- Getting home — NightBus, or ride-share; SkyTrain stops around 1–1:30 AM
- The eastern edge — Gastown borders the Downtown Eastside, and you will see visible poverty toward Alexander and Powell. It is a short, well-lit walk and violence against visitors is rare
- Tipping — 15–20% is standard
Staying in the neighbourhood makes the whole evening simpler — see our staying in Gastown guide.

Gastown Bars FAQs
What are the best bars in Gastown?
Pourhouse at 162 Water for classic cocktails, The Alibi Room at 157 Alexander for craft beer, Six Acres on Maple Tree Square for a relaxed pint, and The Keefer Bar at 135 Keefer — technically Chinatown, five minutes away — for atmosphere.
Is Gastown or Granville better for a night out?
Gastown for good drinks in beautiful heritage rooms, with no cover and conversation possible. Granville for large clubs, dancing and a 3 AM finish. They are ten minutes apart, so starting in Gastown and moving to Granville late is a common plan.
How much do cocktails cost in Gastown?
Roughly C$16–22 at the serious cocktail bars, with beer at C$7–10. The Irish pubs and casual spots run considerably cheaper, often half the cocktail price.
What time do Gastown bars close?
Most cocktail bars call last orders between midnight and 1 AM, with larger pubs and the Keefer running to around 2 AM at weekends. If you want a later night, move to Granville.
Do I need reservations for Gastown bars?
Worth making at Pourhouse and The Keefer on weekends, Friday and Saturday above all.
Is Gastown safe at night?
Yes, with the usual city caution. Gastown borders the Downtown Eastside, so you will see visible poverty and homelessness toward the eastern edge around Alexander and Powell. Violence against visitors is rare, the streets are well lit, and the crawl route is short.
What’s the best Gastown bar crawl route?
Steamworks at 6 PM, Pourhouse at 7, Six Acres at 9:45 and The Keefer at 10:45 — about 1 km in total. Swap in the Alibi Room early if beer is the priority.
Is the Keefer Bar in Gastown?
Not strictly — it is at 135 Keefer Street in Chinatown, about five minutes’ walk from Gastown. It is almost always listed with the Gastown bars because it belongs to the same night out.
Where are the breweries in Vancouver?
Mostly in Mount Pleasant and East Vancouver rather than Gastown. Gastown has Steamworks as a brewpub and the Alibi Room as the city’s best beer bar, but the tasting rooms are a short SkyTrain or bus ride away.
Is there a dress code in Gastown?
Nothing strict. Smart casual is more than enough, and Gastown is far more relaxed about this than the Granville clubs. Wear something you can walk on cobblestones in.
